Chapter Eighteen

A week had gone by, and Lane found herself working another wedding with Helen, which wasn’t unusual, just a bit more uncomfortable today. After her uncontrollable urge to kiss Helen last week, Lane had thought it best to keep her distance. Since she hadn’t heard from Helen, she assumed she’d thought the same. So far today, they’d both been successful.

Lane and Iris had just finished with the last of the bridesmaids. Everyone was set, but she wanted to touch up the bride’s makeup one last time. She pushed open the door from the adjoining room slightly but didn’t enter when she heard the frantic voice of the bride. Helen was with her.

“I have no idea why I’m doing this. I’m not even sure it’s the right thing to do.” The bride paced the room.

Helen put her hands on the bride’s shoulders. “You love him, don’t you?”

“I love him so much, but I just wanted to have a small celebration. All of this is overwhelming.” The bride raised her hands in the air.

“After a three-minute walk down the aisle and a ten-minute ceremony, it’ll be over, and you can party until the cows come home.”

“I never wanted this huge show. His mother is just—” The bride’s helpless sigh morphed into a low growl.

“You’re not marrying his mother. By tomorrow night she’ll be back in Chicago, and you’ll be married to your soul mate.” Helen lifted the bride’s chin with her finger. “That’s what you want, isn’t it?”

The bride gave her a slow smile and nodded. “It is.”

Helen stepped back and gave the bride a once-over. “Your fiancé is a lucky man.”

Lane pulled the door closed slightly as Iris put her hands to her chest. “Wow. Helen really is different than we thought. I can see now why you kissed her.”

Lane blew out a breath. “I don’t know if I’m ready yet to be loved. You know it’s been such a long road with the Belinda mess.”

“You’re ready. You have been for a while, even before you broke up with her.” Iris stared into her eyes. “She was bad for you, made you question who you are as a person.”

“I can’t deny that.” Lane took in a deep breath. “I think she’s damaged me in ways.”

“Stop that.” Iris grabbed her by the shoulders. “There’s nothing wrong with you. She’s the one who’s screwed up. You just need to realize it’s okay to talk about how you feel and what you want.” She let her hands trail down Lane’s arms to her hands.

“Yeah. I never could do that with her.” She’d been too afraid Belinda would leave. Which she did anyway.

Iris glanced through the crack in the doorway at Helen. “Well, you sure don’t have any issues about being brutally honest with Helen.”

“That’s because we’re not fucking.”

“Not yet anyway.” Iris gave her a sly smile.

Lane let out a short laugh. “You’re so sure of this, aren’t you?”

“Have I ever been wrong?” Iris fancied herself somewhat of a matchmaker.

“There was that one time with Pam and Colin.
